Frank Warren of Post Secrets

Frank Warren of Post Secrets came to Utah Sate and talked about the success of Post Secrets. Who would have thought that from such a small intriguing idea, Warren would have what he has today with his Blog. I was surprised by the secrets that many people have sent to Warren. I thought his presentation was intriguing, interesting and fantastic.
I had mixed emotion as to how I felt about the post secrets that were talked about. Some where humorous, others were so serious I didn’t know how to react. It is easy to see why Warren is looking toward suicide prevention with his idea. I think all people have skeletons in their closets and through post secret they are able to let them out and by doing so they feel better about their lives and what has happened in the past and then this gives them a way to deal with it in the future. I have heard of Frank Warren before but never really looked into post secrets until now. I truly am amazed at the things people send to him. It is like people give Warren this privileged peak in their life, like he is invisible and he is privileged that they trust him with that. He may be the most trusted person in America when it comes to people telling him their secrets. I really think what is happening with this project is amazing

Poetry reading on USU Campus

Alicia Ostriker read from her book of poems on Tuesday, April 2 to USU students. The poems were great and I am glad to know I was in support of the Department of English, and their speakers. Ostriker has been nominated twice for National Book Awards. I thought the reading was interesting because this was the first time I have attended a reading like this. I have heard of them but never been to one until now. I was impressed with the content of Ostrikers poems. It opened my mind to different ideas and helped me think and look at things in a different way. I was impressed by Ostrikers work and would be interested in reading the books which she has written. I believe she has written eleven different volumes of poetry and I am sure, from what I observed that each volume is worth reading.

Utah State University holds Luau on Campus

The Voyage was great and very entertaining. One of the biggest things that stood out to me while I watched this performance was the passion the Polynesian dancers have as they perform, there must have been a lot of preparation put into this performance because it was put together very well. Every participant in the Luau performed with passion and the dancers moved together wonderfully. The choreography seems so unique and was very captivating as well. I couldn’t help but find this performance to be unique, neat, and fascinating. Some performers told stories about their people and the islands. Many of the dances told stories of the Polynesian culture as well and I think it was so neat to fallow each unique dance as it told a story about the islands and the people.

USU Ballroom Dance

When a dance is choreographed well with a great music choice to back it up, it sends chills down my spine. I had the opportunity to observe the USU Ballroom Dance team and they performed very well. I do like dance and have a great respect for those who are able to dance so easily. There is no question that USU Ballroom dance is a great organization and I want it to succeed. The students who performed are much better dancers than I will ever be. I am also glad the students who participate in it have such dedication to their dance and organization.

Position Paper, Burger Planet

During the past decade there has been a rise in the consumer’s awareness and consciousness of diet and the need for healthier lifestyles. Caloric and fat intake has become a deciding factor in food choices, and due to the stigma of healthiness surrounding fast food consumption, the potential to negatively affect Burger Planet and its franchises is great.

Since its foundation in 1934, Burger Planet has served upwards of 52 billion customers throughout the world. Over the years, the Quick Service Restaurant Industry has become a staple in American society however, growing consumer awareness and a series of recent legislation threatens its place in society. Within the past three years some of the United States' most prominent cities such as New York and Los Angeles have passed strict laws regarding the issues of health in the Quick Service Restaurant industry with similar legislation in the process in several other states.

It is suggested that an implementation of a healthy alternative to Burger Planet's menu and image evaluation would be beneficial to the company as well as the consumer. The addition of Jayne Peterson and a newly added menu is a great start to the change. Her notoriety in the mass media is a benefit, and having her as a spokeswoman will put Burger Planet in a better light with consumer's who place health in high regard. Additionally, the newly added menu options add to the positive change. The new menu, which includes gourmet salads, fresh fruit and low-fat options, will draw in a new market of health conscious consumers, namely middle-aged women who previously did not consume fast food as highly.

It would also be beneficial to highlight Burger Planet's belief in healthy lifestyles for its customers. As Peterson said in a recent interview, "The company believes in encouraging customers to live healthier, active lifestyles."

Although the new menu is to be advertised please do not disregard the original menu that has aided Burger Planet in its growing success. Ensure that customers know that Burger Planet is simply improving its menu and not changing it, and not alienating our base customers who were crucial to success.

The fast food industry has had a problem with caloric intake. Soda for example is offered with most value meals. Although soda is not specifically addressed as a problem with Burger Planet, soda makes up a large part of the caloric intake from meals at restaurants.

Caroline Shugart USU Employee Wellness Coordinator said, “Soda has 15 teaspoons of sugar and 250 calories in a 20 ounce bottle.”

“Why have so much crap in drinks and why market it to kids, I think it’s unethical.”

If people stop drinking one soda a day that they would normally drink, Shugart said over the course of one year 91,250 calories and 50 pounds of sugar would no longer be taken into the body,

“That is 26 pounds of fat that could be lost in a year.” Shugart said.

According to an article from http://www.ehow.com/how_2146946_calculate-calories-needed-per-day.html, “Many people live by the 2,000 calorie a day diet, the truth is the number of calories you need to maintain your body weight will vary greatly depending on your activity level and current weight.” Although this is true, we can use 2,000 calories as a baseline when looking at caloric intake. According to http://www.fatcalories.com/, large fries from McDonalds contain 570 calories, a medium 380, and small 250. Depending on what hamburger is purchased in a meal deal, the calories range from 250 calories for a small hamburger, to 740 calories for a double quarter pound hamburger with cheese. So if a person ordered small fries, a hamburger and drank 20 oz. of soda, that person would consume more than 750 calories in from the smallest meal. Portion sizes are larger than they need to be as well. If a person ordered a quarter pound hamburger, with a large drink of soda and a large fry, the person would consume 1560 calories for one meal and that is without a refill on the soda. That only leaves 440 calories to consume for the rest of the day. If the meal was replaced by a chicken sandwich instead, the calories from chicken sandwiches range from 400 calories to 670 calories. If people eat out two times a day and 2,000 calories is all the body needs to function in a healthy manner then it is easy to see how many fast food organizations need to change their meals to make them healthier.

One Step too Far
Patent pending No-Step hopes to decrease ladder injuries.

While ladder injuries are prevalent during construction and household chores many precautions have been implemented to prevent these injuries, one recent development in ladder safety is the patent pending No-Step.

Larry Allred Sr. and Larry Allred Jr. the creators of no-step said, “No-Step was created to reduce ladder injuries and bring about a safer work environment for people working on ladders.”

Younger Allred said among the list of safety precautions used to prevent accidents is the suggestion that no individual uses the top step of the ladder while working. He said the warning signs are easy to ignore and many people use this top step anyway because the sign doesn’t stop them, becomes faded from sunlight or is scratched off.

“No-step stops people from using the top steps of ladders all together,” Younger Allred said.

He said it snaps into place and stays securely in the top step preventing anyone from stepping further up the ladder than they should, in this way there is a lower possibility that people will fall because balance won’t be lost and ladders won’t teeter back and forth because people are standing to high on them.

Younger Allred said, “I am hoping the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will recognize that their labeling is being over looked with ladder safety. This is one more simple precaution that can save lives and prevent injuries and will be much more effective than warning stickers.”

The Safe Ladder Management report stated, “OSHA concluded that 100% of ladder accidents might be eliminated with proper attention to the application of equipment, and the proper training of climbers. Human failure causes most ladder falls, but the preventable error is often administrative; not the fault of the victim.”

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report more than 532,000 people were injured in falls from ladders in 2007.

According to Department of Human Services, Victoria, Australia, “Trauma researchers at the Alfred Hospital have begun looking at preventative measures to improve ladder safety following the release of statistics that show one-in-three ladder falls results in severe head injury and most patients eventually returned home, many required extensive rehabilitation and a number did not survive their injuries.”

Introducing a new product for step ladders, the new product known as No-Step is molded from a non-conductive piece of plastic (polypropylene). It has been engineered to fit most all makes of "A-Frame" step ladders. The purpose of this design is to deny any access to or above the top step, or cap of a step ladder. If you are standing too high on the ladder you may lose your balance and fall. Most falls from ladders seem to result in head trauma. The design will run from the bottom of the ladder cap downward to the very top "step" which is referred to by OSHA as "Not a Step" (1926.1053(b)(13). No-Step will help lower step ladder accidents in direct relation to this existing issue.

Cache Valley Area Association Teaches Investing Fundamentals.
The economy suffers because lawmakers don’t understand investing concepts.

Dear Jason Anderson,

A non-profit organization called Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA), teaches people to learn the right mentality and approaches when investing to become successful.

“America is suffering because people and lawmakers don’t understand these concepts,” said Preston Parker, the founder of CVAIA .

Parker believes through proper education and practice, people can become financially independent within ten years of following the guidelines set forth by CVAIA. Members of CVAIA become wealthy with the passive income they receive through investing properly. Parker said nearly 95 percent of people in the world live off the earned income they make from going to work every day. He said the other five percent, the worlds wealthy, live off of passive income, which is the money they make from investing wisely. CVAIA teaches people should spend their time doing things they love, and learn the right mentality and approaches to investing to become successful and increase their passive income.

CVAIA is a non-profit organization, has more than 80 members and their next meeting is Feb. 26, at 7:00 pm. CVAIA embraces the Law of Attraction, the Law of Abundance, the Law of Exchange. They practice the methods found in the ideologies of books including, Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Wealthy Barber, The Millionaire Next Door, Atlas Shrugged, The Automatic Millionaire, and The Secret. CVAIA began in August of 2007 and now has members from many geographical locations and from all walks of life. The members come together with the same belief: that education mitigates the risks of investing.

Fish Farming

Due to overfishing and habitat damage of the ocean people have turned to fish farming. Oysters, clams and muscles are the best choices when fish farming. Oysters, clams and muscles are farmed in healthy manners which do not hurt the oceans ecosystem or habitat. Tiny plankton out of the water are used to feed oysters, muscles and clams. This means there is no other supplementation. Clams are raised on sandy shores and there harvest does little to disturb the ecosystem. Oysters and clams are raised in cages or bags which reside above the seafloor. This type of farming does not affect the oceans habitat. To learn more information about fish farming visit Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Website http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_issues.aspx

Utah State Logo or Aggie Symbol?

There has been a lot of discussion on weather Utah State University should keep their nationally known U-State logo or change it to the "A" symbol many alumni associate Utah State with. The Statesmen, Utah States paper, said the A symbol, which represents the school mascot, Aggie, is being considered because of the unity it provides for students and alumni alike.

I do like the A symbol however, I do not think we need to change our nationally known logo. The Statesman also mentioned the uniforms that mainly carry the u-state logo are the athletic uniforms. I really like the u-state logo because it does represent our school in a way the rest of the nation can associate with. If we only have A on uniforms, it will not only take some time for the rest of the nation to realize that A represents Utah State, but then Utah State will be nationally recognized by the mascot, the Aggie and not the school itself. I haven't done the research but I am pretty sure not many colleges represent themselves on a national level by their mascot.

I am not even sure why Utah State is having this conversion about changing the logo because it will not only take five years to change, but will cost extra money the school does not have, especially with all the budget cuts recently.

I think alumni and students are already united by the A symbol. We don't need to show the rest of the nation how united we are. I go to Utah State, I will represent Utah Sate, and I want other people to know I represent Utah State and I believe the best way to do that is through the U-State logo, not through the A representing our mascot.

Restaurants and Seafood

Monterey Bay Aquarium offerers programs that partner up with the Seafood Watch cause. The restaurants who partner with seafood watch play important roles in protecting the oceans health by the food they offer on their menus.
Monterey bay says "Participating restaurants pledge to not serve items from the Seafood Watch "Avoid" list and train wait staff about their seafood choices. Seafood Watch assists you in these efforts, providing materials, answering questions and helping with staff training. The program is open to any Monterey Bay area restaurant that serves seafood, as well as past participants in our annual Cooking for Solutions event."

Restaurant participants are recognized by Monterey Bay, receive a plaque to post in the restaurant showing participation. There are 27 restaurants who have teamed up with Monterey Bay in the California area, 10 of which recently started the program. Seafood is prevalent, being served in restaurants across America.

Google Ocean

Google earth is pretty cool as it is. Anytime you want to look at different parts of the world you can get on Google Earth and look around like you are there in person. Monterey Bay Aquarium said,

"Now users of Google Earth can dive into the ocean, explore marine habitats including Monterey Bay and get the latest information about how to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program and scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) made important contributions to the Ocean in Google Earth that was released February 2."

Dredging

Catching fish in mass quantities is important to fisherman when fishing the ocean. One prevelant fishing technique used to catch many fish is called dredging. Dredging consists of dragging a large metal crate along the bottom of the seafloor to catch bottom-dwelling shellfish, this destroys all life on the bottom of the ocean. Monterey Bay Aquarium says, "Once the living seafloor is damaged, it can take centuries to grow back. Near Australia, bottom trawlers have pulled up and destroyed six-foot-tall gorgonians (coldwater coral) that were at least 700 years old. And with trawl fleets fishing all over the world, the seafloor in popular spots never gets a chance to recover. Parts of the North Sea off Denmark are trawled up to 400 times a year." There are many fish that rely on the seafloor to live. Monterey Bay says people should favor fishing practices that spare the seafloor. Type Two Diabetes

Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, has been covered frequently by papers regarding type two diabetes. This is a sickness that is becoming a problem in America.

During a presentation at USU last semester, Caroline Shugart USU Employee Wellness Coordinator said, type two diabetes, which is completely preventable, is becoming more prevalent in society. Shugart said with meal portion size increasing and an engineered environment which helps Americans become less active, it is estimated the US will spend $225 billion annually for poor health care, which could be prevented through dieting and exercise.

Shugart a Registered Dietician said, Americans look back at smoking ads and laugh because the ads are so ridiculous, portraying Americans smoking as if it’s healthy, but the same thing is happening with commercials about soda and fast food.

“Soda has 15 teaspoons of sugar and 250 calories in a 20 ounce bottle,” Shugart said, “Why have so much crap in drinks and why market it to kids, I think it’s unethical.”

If a person stops drinking one soda a day, Shugart said over the course of one year 91,250 calories and 50 pounds of sugar would no longer be taken into the body,

“That is 26 pounds of fat that could be lost in a year.” She said

Shugart also said, “More than 33 percent of children born after 2000 will develop diabetes.”

Perhaps we should look to start fixing this problem.

Orange Roughy

Many fish population are dwindling into non-existence because of habitat fragmentation and overexploitation. Orange Roughy is a fish found on seafood menus across the US and as the world continues to overfish orange roughy the oceans habitat is damaged and orange roughys fish population dwindle.

The Seafood Watch Program has been put in place to prevent further damage and extinction of our once great fish populations. Consumers vote on the fish they want to eat with their mouths. If a fish is in high demand, it is caught at high levels. Because orange roughy has been in high demand its being overfished. Monterey Bay Aquarium reports, “Unfortunately, years of heavy fishing have decimated orange roughy populations. Although fishery management plans are now in place, it’ll take decades for this slow-growing fish to recover.”

To find out more about the Seafood Watch Program visit http://www.mbayaq.org/To see Monterey Bay Aquariums full report on orange roughy visit http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/content/media/MBA_SeafoodWatch_OrangeRoughyReport.pdf

Importing Seafood.

The New York Times article China Vows Food-Safety Changes, addresses the concerns the Food and Drug Administration have with imported seafood. Some Americans may be unaware of the health concerns the F.D.A. has with imported seafood. This article states that, "Chinese goods make up about 22 percent of United States seafood imports. But they accounted for about 63 percent of the shipments that were refused by the F.D.A. last year for having animal drug residues." Imported seafood complications are nothing new to the F.D.A. but, Americans can do more to get more education on Seafood. Where and how is it fished of farmed? All of these things play a major role in the oceans health and individual Americans health as well.

Seafood Watch

Seafood Watch is a program put forth by Monterey Bay Aquarium. Seafood Watch educates individuals about the ongoing issues the world faces with seafood. Each year millions of fish are caught and killed to sustain an ever growing world population with a growing love for seafood. Monterey Bay Aquarium estimates that nearly 1.4 million sharks are killed each year, discarded as pure waist because they are labeled as bycatch, which is the catching of marine animals unintentionally.

Many fish are not only labeled as bycatch, but are caught in ways that hurt fish populations and the ecosystems of the oceans. A popular, common fishing practice known as dredging (dragging a large metal crate along the bottom of the seafloor to catch bottom-dwelling shellfish) destroys all life on the bottom of the ocean.

Also, many larger fish have been proven to have high levels of mercury, a toxic metal that exists naturally in the environment. Never breaking down with time, mercury enters our rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. Mercury levels within larger fish are so high that the Environmental Defense recommends that men only eat one serving a month. Women, especially if pregnant, and children should not partake of these fish at all.

Monterey Bay Aquarium states, "Bacteria can then convert [mercury] to an organic form called methylmercury -- the form that is dangerous to people. Although mercury levels are almost always low in water bodies, methylmercury biomagnifies up the food chain.” For this reason, larger predator fish like swordfish and shark have high mercury levels. According to the EPA, “Mercury concentrations in fish can be 1 to 10 million times the mercury concentration in the water.”

If interested in knowing more or getting involved with Sea Food Watch, follow these steps.

1. Go to Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Web site, http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp. All the information from this article and more is located at this site.

2. Through Monterey Bay Aquarium, get a free pocket guide about which seafood is caught or farmed in environmentally responsible ways and which is safe for consumption. Individuals may use these guides when ordering seafood.

4. Individuals can let restaurants and grocery stores know what they think about the seafood they offer. Remember that restaurants and grocery stores order what the consumer wants. The consumers can help guide restaurants and grocery stores seafood choices.
